Beginning year band announcements
First of all, congrats to all JV and varsity students completing one of our best band camps ever! Special thanks to drum majors David Gabaldon, Gabbi Oakman and Chloe Mears for their fantastic leadership and service, as well as all student leaders. Special thanks to Stephen and Jonna Clifford and Mary Honas for their leadership during band camp, as well as the ice cream social and picnic.
So, get rolling with the school year!
Jazz students: All Jazz students, please bring your instruments on Monday, Aug. 15th, we will play the first day!
All JV and varsity students: We will not play on the 15th, but you will need your instrument Tuesday, Aug. 16th, and we will play inside.
Early Rehearsals for Varsity: We will have early rehearsals every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday morning, beginning at 6:45AM ON THE FIELD! These are graded rehearsals and we start right on the dot! Our first early rehearsal will be Wednesday, Aug. 17th. They will last until approximately Oct. 13th.
Monday Night Rehearsals for Varsity: As stated on the summer/fall calendar, our six Monday night rehearsal dates are: Aug. 22nd, 29th, Sept. 12th, 19th, 26th, Oct. 10th.
Students and parents: I’m using a “Remind” app for last minute instructions, such as “we’re inside due to weather”, or “you need your coordinates today” etc. Be advised, this is a one way communication, please do not reply with this app, I’m just sending last minute information. Here’s how you sign up: Use one of the following codes, and when you do, you have to use the actual “@“ symbol in the text. Text number 81010 Varsity’s code is @2f74c JV’s code is @jvmarc Drumline battery’s code is @f6ckd FYI, if that doesn’t sign you up, try the code without the “@” symbol.
Parents: Please let me know if you are available to help with a couple easy “fix-it” projects around the band room. Drilling holes, fixing stands, etc.
I hope you’re ready for a great year, so here we go!
Mr. Reed
Welcome new associate director, Ms. Rebecca Fillingham
I’m very happy to announce that Ms. Rebecca Fillingham will be our new associate band director this year. She brings a lot of experience with marching and concert band. She is a fantastic music educator, full of energy, experience and motivation! There’s no doubt you will enjoy meeting and working with her. Please read her bio below:
Rebecca Fillingham is excited to be joining the Shawnee Mission North band staff as Assistant Director of Bands at North, and Director of Elementary Bands at five of the North area’s feeder schools. Mrs. Fillingham has been an instrumental music educator for more than a decade, with experience ranging from beginning band, to teaching and conducting students at the collegiate level. As the head director in the West Platte School District, Mrs. Fillingham developed and directed the entire band program, from starting beginners, developing the technique and musical sensitivity of intermediate students, and pushing high school musicians to fully realize their potential in responsibility, commitment and performance.
From 2012-2014, she worked as a Graduate Conducting Associate with the University of Central Missouri Bands, under the supervision and mentorship of Dr. Scott Lubaroff. In this capacity she spent a great deal of time rehearsing and conducting wind ensembles, assisting with marching band, and teaching undergraduate courses.
Prior to her graduate studies, Mrs. Fillingham spent seven years as a woodwind instructor and band clinician for Palen Music Center in Liberty, Missouri. This allowed her the opportunity to work one on one with students of all ability levels, as well as serve as guest clinician to area band programs. Many of her students were placed in area honor bands, as well as the Kansas City Youth Symphony, and earned I ratings at regional and state solo contests. She also served in the Monett School District, first as Assistant Director of Bands, and eventually as Director of Bands.
Mrs. Fillingham earned her undergraduate degree in music education at Missouri State University, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude in the Honors College, and was a member of several honors fraternities. She played in many of the University Wind Ensembles, and was a drum major of the 350-piece Pride Band for two years.
Rebecca and her husband, Matt, have three energetic boys: Josiah-11, Robbie-9, and Kai-7. Matt, also a teacher and musician, teaches Math and assists with the band at North Kansas City High School. He is also an accomplished trombone player, playing with several area jazz bands. Their sons keep busy with school, soccer, swimming, music lessons, art, make-believe, and general rough-housing.
Welcome Ms. Fillingham!

HOW TO PREPARE FOR HOT WEATHER CAMP:
The night before rehearsals: drink more water than you need and get more sleep than you need. Fill an insulated gallon water container with water and freeze overnight. Try to reduce or quit drinking soda 🙂
The day of rehearsals: eat a healthy breakfast with protein, or you will not feel very good later on. Wear tennis shoes with socks (no flip flops), hat, sunglasses, sun screen, light colored clothing (not black) and your gallon of water. We will have parents on stand-by to help with additional water and we will have the misters running. Keep drinking water all the time! We will observe all heat advisory rules, and we will not go outside in the afternoon, just the morning.
***kids, PLEASE go outside over the next few days and continue to acclimate. If you don’t, you will probably end up not feeling well, sitting out and missing rehearsal, and we need everyone to participate! Prepare yourself that it’s OK to feel hot, it’s OK to sweat, it’s OK to feel thirst, that’s all normal in hot weather. Having said that, we will ask you to sit if you feel light headed, cold, feel “goose bumps” or ill. We will take care of your health, but please help YOURSELF by getting acclimated while you still can.
During the 8AM-4PM days, bring money for lunch or bring your own lunch, many students walk down Johnson Drive (in groups) to eat.
July 28 Ice cream social information:
all variety and JV students will meet in the cafeteria for free ice cream and a brief meeting. Upon paying your band fee ($50 for drill team, $75 for JV, or $125 for varsity) or signing your fee payment plan, all students will receive their 2016 show shirt. We will also take care of instrument rental ($50 if you can take care of that), parent volunteer signups, fast passes, fund raising and several other house keeping things. What is a fast pass? Parents can purchase a season ticket for the home football games at a reduced price, and you will also receive part of that money back in your band account. Administration has not told me the exact amounts. FYI- you can only receive this band rebate if you purchase the fast pass through the band at the ice cream social or band picnic, NOT during the regular school registration process. I’m sorry I don’t have exact details, but we will tell you precise fast pass information the night of the ice cream social. We can take payments with check (made payable to Shaw-Mi-No) or credit card for everything except instrument rentals, which has to be paid to SM North by check. You can also purchase trash bags and Hy-Vee coupons books as fundraisers, all of which goes directly into your child’s band account, thus making your fee payment less. The Hy-Vee coupon books are awesome, because $4 of the $5 you pay goes right back into your band account!
Aug. 5th- band picnic information:
Varsity students are required to attend, as you are performing that night. JV student and all parents are highly encouraged to attend. $5 per person to eat. “Two Guys and Grill” are catering, which will include hamburger or hotdog, chips, and drink. This isn’t a fund raiser, we’re just trying to cover our costs. We will eat t 6:00PM and the varsity band performance will follow around 7:00PM, followed by our annual drill down!
Parents, if you’re new, I know this information might seem overwhelming…trust me, we will take care of everything and you will have a great year! Just keep attending the events, and your child will have a great time. Looking forward to a great year in band. Welcome back everyone!
